Comparative Studies of the Fractionation of Serum Proteins in Acute and Chronic Infection

Abstract
The results of electrophoretic determinations of the serum proteins in a group of 40 normal subjects and in subjects with a acute and chronic infections are summarized.
The following findings were obtained.
(1)The mean serum protein was 6.6gm/100ml(S.D.¡¾0.62) in acute infection and 6.1gm/100ml(S.D.¡¾1.11) in chronic infection. It will be seen that there was a significant decrease in the concentration of total protein in chronic infection(p£¼0.05).
(2)In acute infection, the mean value of serum albumin was 3.60gm/100ml (S.D.¡¾0.59). In chronic infection, the mean value of serum albumin was 2.86gm/100ml (S.D.¡¾0.79). Compared with normal value of serum albumin (3.69gm/100ml), there was a significant decrease in chronic infection(p£¼0.05).
(3)The mean values of alpha-1 globulin in acute and chronic infection showed 0.27gm/100ml(S.D.¡¾0.10), 0.33gm/100ml(S.D.¡¾0.11), RESPECTIVELY. Compared with normal value of alpha-1 globulin(0.27gm/100ml), the significant differencs were not found in both acute and chronic infection.
(4)In both groups the alpha¡©2 globulin was low in acute infection (0.80gm/100ml, S.D.¡¾0.23) and raised in chronic infection (0.96gm/100ml, S.D. ¡¾0.32) compared with normal. But there was no significant differences among them (p£¾0.05).
(5)Compared with the normal value of beta globulin (1.00gm/100ml), the mean values of beta globulin in both acute and chronic infection showed significant differences(p£¼0.05). The values of beta globulin was 0.81gm/100ml (S.D.¡¾0.17) in acute infection and 0.82gm/100ml (S.D.¡¾0.21) in chronic infection.
(6)In both groups the gamma globulin levels were higher as 1.11gm/100ml (S.D.¡¾0.22) in acute infection and 1.12gm/1--ml (S.D.¡¾0.44) in chronic infection than normal value (1.02gm/100ml). But no significant differences were found statistically among them (p£¾0.05).
